Foods To Avoid When Pregnant

 

Pregnant women should take precautions during early pregnancy by eating a well balanced meal, but there are some foods that you should avoid during pregnancy as you are at increased risk of bacterial food poisoning. You should stay away from foods that could harbor potentially harmful bacteria and chemicals which will endanger the growth of your fetus.

Here is the list of foods and drinks to avoid during pregnancy:

Raw Meat: Beef or poultry should be properly cooked to reduce the risk of contamination with certain types of bacteria such as E-coli and Salmonella. These bacteria can cause food poisoning.

Stay away from hot dogs or burger as the raw salami and turkey together with the preserved onions and mustards contain chemicals and preservatives which might harm the developing fetus. The bacteria in the foods which can get into your bloodstream and may cause blood poisoning leading to a miscarriage.

Fish with Mercury: Fish with high levels of mercury such as king mackerel, swordfish and , shark should be avoided during pregnancy as consumption of high levels of mercury may cause brain damage to the fetus.

Raw Shellfish: Shellfish such as clams, mussels and oysters should not be taken raw during pregnancy as they contain harmful bacteria which can damage the growth of the fetus. However, if they are cooked properly it will help kill some types of bacteria.

Raw Eggs: Raw eggs may be exposed to salmonella. Any foods that contain raw eggs such as mayonnaise, salad dressings, homemade ice cream should be avoided by pregnant women.

Soft Cheeses: Pregnant women should avoid soft cheeses such as among others : Brie, Camembert and other types of soft cheeses. These cheeses contains certain types of bacteria which will infect the baby through blood poisoning and may lead to miscarriage.

Unpasteurized Milk: Unpasteurized milk contains bacteria which can lead to miscarriage. Therefore, it is advisable for pregnant women to consume pasteurized milk.

Caffeine: Pregnant women should avoid drinking coffee during the 1st trimester to avoid the likelihood of a miscarriage and premature birth. Coffee contains caffeine which is diuretic which will flush out fluid from the body and resulting in water and calcium loss. Pregnant women are therefore advised to drink plenty of water, juice, and milk rather than coffee.

Alcohol: Consuming alcohol will interfere with the healthy growth of the baby. Therefore alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy as it is not safe for the baby’s growth.

Unwashed Vegetables: Pregnant should take plenty of fresh vegetables, but it is essential that the vegetables are washed properly before eating to avoid potential exposure to harmful bacteria.

Unpasteurized Dairy and Juices : . Stay away from unpasteurized juices like apple cider or fresh-squeezed orange juice. But juices which have been treated to kill bacteria are safe to be consumed.
